RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although there are models predicting epilepsy recurrence under different clinical conditions, few studies have examined blood biomarkers. Inflammation plays a crucial role in the occurrence and development of epilepsy. We analyzed inflammatory mediators in a regional hospital-based epilepsy cohort and investigated their relationship with subsequent epilepsy recurrence. METHODS: Interictal inflammatory mediators were measured in 128 patients diagnosed with epilepsy participating in a prospective study. Inflammatory mediators were compared during the follow-up period between patients who experienced epilepsy recurrence and those who did not. We also assessed the correlation between inflammatory mediators and the time interval until the next recurrence. RESULTS: Over a median 4-month follow-up period, 41 patients experienced seizure recurrence. Differences in interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) levels were observed between seizure recurrence and non-recurrence groups. After adjusting for covariates through multivariate Cox regression analysis, the patients in the third IL-6 tertile (>2.31 pg/mL; HR: 2.49; 95 % CI: 1.00-6.16; P = 0.049) and in the third TNF-α tertile (>0.74 pg/mL; HR: 2.80; 95 % CI: 1.13-6.92; P = 0.026) had higher risk of seizure recurrence. The time until the next recurrence was negatively correlated with IL-6 level (ρ =  - 0.392, P = 0.011). CONCLUSION: High levels of IL-6 and TNF-α are associated with a higher possibility of seizure recurrence. Future predictive models should also include inflammatory mediators in addition to clinical variables.

RESUMO

Graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) can convert the ultraviolet (200- 380 nm) into available wavelength (400- 700 nm) for microalgae cultivation. However, it has not been applied in large-scale microalgae culture due to its high cost and difficulties in recovery. This study proposed a new strategy for the sustainable use of GOQDs, namely, GOQDs solution was added to the outer sandwich of the reactor. Herein, the effects of direct and indirect exposure of different GOQDs concentrations (0, 100, and 1000 mg/L) on the microalgae culture were compared. When microalgae were directly exposed to the GOQDs, 100 mg/L of GOQDs increased the biomass production of microalgae by 24.0 %, while 1000 mg/L of GOQDs decreased biomass production by 31 %. High concentration of GOQDs (direct exposure) could cause extra oxidative stress in the microalgae cells and result in a significant reduction of pigment content. When microalgae were indirectly exposed to the GOQDs, the increased concentration of GOQDs enhanced the growth of microalgae. Compared to the blank group, 1000 mg/L of GOQDs increased the microalgae biomass production and bioenergy by 14.1 % and 40.17 %, respectively. The indirect exposure of GOQDs can effectively avoid photo-oxidation and organelle damage to the microalgae cells. Overall, the indirect exposure of GOQDs is a sustainable way for effectively promoting microalgae growth and reducing the application cost.

RESUMO

Nitrogen and phosphorus contamination in wastewater is a serious environmental concern and poses a global threat to sustainable development. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the studies on simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal (SNPR) during 1986-2022 (538 publications) was conducted using bibliometrics, which showed that simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) is the most promising process. To better understand SNDPR, the dissolved oxygen, carbon to nitrogen ratio, carbon source type, sludge retention time, Cu2+ and Fe3+, pH, salinity, electron acceptor type of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs), temperature, and other influencing factors were analyzed. Currently, SNDPR has been successfully implemented in activated sludge systems, aerobic granular sludge systems, biofilm systems, and constructed wetlands; sequential batch mode of operation is a common means to achieve this process. SNDPR exhibits a significant potential for phosphorus recovery. Future research needs to focus on: (1) balancing the competitiveness between denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms (DGAOs) and DPAOs, and countermeasures to deal with the effects of adverse conditions on SNDPR performance; (2) achieving SNDPR in continuous flow operation; and (3) maximizing the recovery of P during SNDPR to achieve resource sustainability. Overall, this study provides systematic and valuable information for deeper insights into SNDPR, which can help in further research.

RESUMO

Aspects of solution and solid-phase reactions between selenite (Se(IV)) and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) were investigated. Experimental results on the effects of initial solution pH, formation and evolution of nZVI corrosion products, and speciation of selenium in nZVI were presented. In general, the rate of Se(IV) removal decreases with increasing initial pH. The observed rate constants of Se(IV) removal decreased from 0.3530 to 0.0364 min-1 as pH increased from 4.0 to 10.0. Composition and morphology of nZVI corrosion products and selenium species were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results confirmed that Se(IV) was reduced to Se(0) and Se(-II) by nZVI. Lower solution pH favored further reduction of Se(0) to Se(-II). Amorphous FeOOH, magnetite/maghemite (Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3) and ferrous hydroxide (Fe(OH)2) were identified as the main corrosion products. Under alkaline conditions, the corrosion products were mainly of Fe(OH)2 along with small amounts of Fe3O4, while nZVI in acidic solutions was oxidized to mostly Fe3O4 and amorphous FeOOH. Furthermore, these corrosion products acted as intermediates for electron transfer and reactive/sorptive sites for Se(IV) adsorption and reduction, thus played a crucial role in the removal of aqueous Se(IV).

RESUMO

Wastewater resources, CO2 emission reduction and microalgae biodiesel are considered as current frontier fields of energy and environmental researches. In this paper, we reviewed the progress in system of microalgae culture for biodiesel production by wastewater and stack gas. Multiple factors including microalgal species, nutrition, culture methods and photobioreactor, which were crucial to the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production, were discussed in detail. A valuable culture system of microalgae for biodiesel production or other high value products combined with the treatment of wastewater by microalgae was put forward through the optimizations of algal species and culture technology. The culture system coupled with the treatment of wastewater, the reduction of CO2 emission with the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production will reduce the production cost of microalgal biofuel production and the treatment cost of wastewater simultaneously. Therefore, it would be a promising technology with important environmental value, social value and economic value to combine the treatment of wastewater with the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production.
